Selection of bark and plant fibre baskets by Nadine Fox Grundy @nadinefoxcrafts

Course Details

Learn about the amazing versatility of tree bark and plant fibres on this two-day course and weave yourself a beautiful, functional basket that can be used for foraging, a plant pot or anything else you would like to put in there!

On this course you will delve into the abundance of materials that are all around us. Nature has so many plants that can be woven such as horseradish, nettles, tree bark, bramble, iris leaves, dandelion stems and so many more. Nadine will show you how to identify, harvest, process, store, then how to prepare the fibres for weaving,

You will use a base of willow bark to make your basket and will be taken step by step through how to coppice willow poles and process the bark ready for weaving. The rim will be made from split hazel and the handle can be wood or plaited plant material or cordage.

The course is run in a covered space in a woodland setting over the weekend.  Campers are welcome to arrive from Friday evening and spend time around the fire, ready for a Saturday morning start.

Tutor Bio

Working with the land by hand, Nadine feels a deep connection to the land and her work as she makes her crafts from the ground up, either growing, coppicing or foraging materials. These are then scraped, split and processed by hand, with axes and knives, then shaped and decorated they become lovingly crafted functional items.

In tune with the seasons, Nadine undertakes coppice and conservation work in the Winter, harvesting bark and planting in the Spring, sharing and teaching in the Summer and harvesting dye and herbal materials and making in the Autumn. Using materials that are sustainable, she can always tell you exactly where your bowl or bag came from!  The items she makes are functional as well as beautiful; it is hugely satisfying to eat from a wooden bowl and spoon that you have made yourself, whilst sat on a chair that you have made entirely by hand.

Nadine runs craft courses, including bark weaving, spoon and bowl carving, and natural paint and ink courses. She also works freelance, teaching greenwood work, demonstrating at shows all over the country and selling her crafts both there and online.  Working anywhere she can carry a log and tools, she is most at home in her woodland workshop.
